Tancook, Lt. Tancook, Flat Island, Ironbound
Just off the coast from Blandford and New Harbour, are four small islands. The largest is Tancook Island with Little Tancook Island very close by (upper left of photo). These islands have daily ferry service from Chester. Ironbound is farther out with limited ferry service (lower right corner of photo). FLAT ISLAND is located to the south east of the Tancooks (lower center of photo). It is just a few miles offshore from New Harbour, but does not have permanent residents any more. Expand the Google Map above to orientate these islands with other locations.
Flat Island map
A close up map view of Flat Island shows three distinct locations. The largest cove is House Cove, located on the west side of the island. Just down the shoreline is a much smaller inlet called Southwest Cove. On the north shore of the island is a place called Sheep Pound Cove. Interestingly, for many years, sheep were kept on Flat Island.
Flat Island Google Earth map
In the Google Earth view, you can clearly see Flat Island's very rugged coastline. Accessibility by boat is very limited. Without a wharf, potential visitors must anchor their main boat in the cove and then use a smaller boat to go ashore. Since it is located farther out from the mainland, strong currents and rough waters are very common. Trips to Flat Island must be taken with caution.
Note: It is my goal to personally visit Flat Island some day. I have been told that there is an old house foundation and cemetery stones on the island. If possible, I will photograph them and then post them to this web site.
